Reuse of materials, structures that change function with user intervention, transforming a space according to needs, giving new life to obsolete buildings… It is possible to transform the existing with a positive attitude, without adding yet another to the dense building stock. On this path, setting the right direction requires identifying the questions and/or problems for a meaningful adaptive reuse: What does the city dweller need today, and what do we have in the current building stock?
At a time when rigid definitions of spatial functions fail and the importance of open public spaces in cities is once again emphasized, A Place to Stand represents the potential to create a breathing space that users can freely transform. This proposal aims to reintroduce water towers—structures embedded in public memory yet at risk of disappearing—into the urban fabric. By reintegrating these poetic architectural elements into the city with new functions, the project seeks to strengthen the public’s relationship with the environment. It aspires to be a thoughtful intervention that establishes a place in the daily rituals of city life while contributing to the city’s public spaces.
