The Izmir Chamber of Commerce (IZTO) Education and Health Foundation launched a nationwide architectural design competition in 2022 with the goal of bringing a world-class, environmentally friendly, and visionary educational base to the city. MAS MIMLAB's proposal was awarded first prize after a meticulous three stage evaluation by a 19 member expert jury among 52 projects from across Turkey.
The proposal sets out to define a new campus typology integrating academics, administration, sports, social amenities, and dormitories into a cohesive ecosystem rooted in a resilient and contextual spatial framework.
Located on the outskirts of the Izmir metropolis, the project area exhibits a unique interface character between urban growth dynamics and rural ecological protection zones. By blending the production-oriented lifestyle of the countryside with the polycentric, mixed-user structure of the city, it creates an innovative "Rural-Urban" (Rurban) dynamic. To manage the urban growth pressure on the Güzelbahçe region, the "Green Link" macro-strategy was formulated in the masterplan. This proposed urban infrastructure acts as a protective boundary, directing urban growth away from ecological and agricultural areas. The goal is to repair regional accessibility, disrupted by the highway, through a new micro-mobility and pedestrian network and foster strong social interaction by bringing campus users and citizens together through shared public spaces, agricultural production, and outdoor events.
The design approaches the campus not as a uniform group of buildings, but as a continuous 'macrocosm' that brings together multiple user profiles, diverse lives, and programs. The natural stream bed dividing the site into two sides is transformed from a threshold into a unifying main "social spine" for the entire settlement. While all communal and social programs are clustered along this water line, academic disciplines are directly articulated to this spine to maximize interdisciplinary interaction.
Within the holistic macrocosm, distinct 'microcosms', each with its own unique character and identity, are created by preserving the natural voids offered by the site. Drawing from local vegetation, topography, and vistas, these focal points form the heart of the masterplan. Sports Microcosm is situated on the flat plateau, this dynamic center hosts major events like graduations and concerts. Agriculture Microcosm bridges the citizen and the student; it establishes an active production cycle with a market area, festival meadow, production gardens, and an open-air cinema. Forum Microcosm utilizes the natural slope to offer an amphitheater and stage layout, serving as an academic gathering space supported by an art garden. Social Microcosm is the heart of the campus, bridging both sides of the stream to connect the library, dining hall, and student center. Botanic Microcosm is located where the stream ends, this is the most serene and meditative area of the campus, densely forested with aromatic plants.
Spatial continuity is ensured by modular architectural "frames" that enclose each microcosm, connecting the structures. Following the natural slope and stream axis, the frames provide continuous pedestrian circulation protected from the climate, providing shade and refuge from rainfall. The sectional design is strictly tied to the site's natural data; masses backing into the slopes terrace down towards the valley, allowing effortless access to open and semi-open spaces even on the upper floors.
The winning competition proposal formed the basis of the masterplan and comprehensive architectural project development contract through all phases, including permitting and construction tender documents.
